Tap the Power of ThoughtJuly 2, 2015
There is a hidden power that most of us ignore, one that can change our lives. It is the power of thought. Our happiness (or unhappiness) flows from the content of our thoughts. "As a man thinks in his heart, so is he". - Proverbs 23:7 What you hold in your heart -- what you value -- determines the quality of your life. If you love and appreciate your family and friends, if you avoid backbiting and negative thinking, if you refrain from judging, your life can become a beacon of loyalty, cheerfulness and joy. Here are a few spiritual tools for avoiding "stinking thinking".
Focus on good things: Whatever we think and talk about most is what we are inviting into our lives. If we are negative, engage in gossip or put downs toward others or even ourselves, we are creating a toxic environment for our souls, a form of spiritual malnutrition.
There was once an American woman who wanted to do something to bring about world peace. She thought about it all the time. She had a spiritual experience while meditating, and was given the idea of a walk for peace. She walked the length and breadth of the entire United States for the sake of peace and said she would not stop until world peace was achieved. She walked for 28 years, with no possessions but what she carried in her blue tunic, walking until given shelter and fasting until people fed her. She called herself Peace Pilgrim. More and more people learned of her mission and wanted to hear her ideas. Occasionally, she would speak to a group, and they recorded what she said. One of her best known sayings is, "If we knew how powerful our thoughts were, we would never again have another negative thought."
Replace negative thoughts: We have far more control over our thoughts than we may realize. We can actually choose to keep our thoughts positive. The Baha'i teachings say, "I charge you all that each one of you concentrate all the thoughts of your heart on love and unity. When a thought of war comes, oppose it by a stronger thought of peace. A thought of hatred must be destroyed by a more powerful thought of love. Do not think the peace of the world an ideal impossible to attain! Nothing is impossible to the Divine Benevolence of God."
Ask for Blessings: Not only to receive them but to give them. A good question to ask is, "What is my calling at this time?" Then listen and watch for answers. "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened." Mathew 7: 7-8. Obviously asking is very important. A close friend of mine is a woman of prayer. She talks to God about everything and invites the Holy Spirit into her daily life. She seeks God's guidance, then envisions what she feels called to. Amazing things begin to manifest in her life with Divine timing. Things she could not possibly arrange come to her and guide her step by step.
